In the classroom I greatly enjoy and value interactions with students and I actively encourage participation through providing a range of learning experiences. In a similar way, I enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues and I believe in the synergy of working as a team. I am confident and knowledgeable about my subject and I work hard to instill in students a passion for life-long learning.
I have been a Senior Head of House for the last 16 years at Island School and a science teacher (Biology specialist) since joining the school in 1991.
In my role as Senior Head of House, I led a team of tutors and support staff in support of students from Y7 to Y13. I also had specific responsibilities for Y12, coordinating a team of specialist teachers and HE counselors to provide a PSHE programme and Higher Education counseling to this year group.
As a science teacher with specialism in Biology, I have taught science across all the year groups including MYP, IGCSE Biology, A level Biology and IB Biology and IB Environmental Systems and Societies.
My first teaching post was at Brampton Manor School, a 11-18 Mixed Comprehensive in the London Borough of Newham. I was there for 7 years and progressed to becoming the Second i/c Science and the Head of Biology. I taught science in Y7-9, GCSE Biology in Y10-11, and A level Biology in Y12-13. I was also the Assistant Head of Year 8 which gave me valuable experience of pastoral care.
As a Science/ Biology teacher, I am up to date with teaching MYP, IGCSE and IB courses For IB Biology, I have over 10 years of experience in teaching this course to both Higher and Standard Levels Prior to teaching IB, I taught A level Biology I also have experience of teaching the IB Environmental Systems and Society course, designing much of the course taught at Island School In my lessons, I use a diverse range of materials including schemes of work which I have devised with my colleagues I also contribute to learning materials on our school's online learning platform In the last 2 years I have taught lessons online due to the COVID closures and I am familiar with both Google Classroom and Zoom
As a Senior Head of House, I was in charge of one of six houses in the school I led and worked closely with a team of tutors to support the students in their learning as well as in building a house identity to enhance their sense of wellbeing and belonging In my role, I was frequently in touch with parents as well as outside bodies such as the Education Department of Hong Kong Additionally, I had responsibility for Y12 and led a team that devised the pastoral curriculum for that year group which included HE counselling
I have always been active in the co-curricular aspects of school and over the years, I have ran a wide range of activities including football, badminton, tennis and chess. I have organised a number of junior camps as well as trips abroad. I have a passion for hiking and have been a long-time member of the AYP team. I have led over a dozen trekking trips to Nepal, China and parts of SE Asia, as well as climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro with a group of Sixth Formers. I strongly believe in the character-building aspects of co-curricular challenges and in their ability to create strong relationships amongst staff and students.
