Teaching Philosophy

  • I believe music education is most meaningful when students actively experience music through performance, collaboration, creativity, and reflection. Music is not only a subject to be studied, but also a powerful way for students to develop confidence, discipline, communication, empathy, and a sense of community.
  • As a choral conductor and music educator, I value ensemble-based learning because it teaches students how to listen carefully, work together, and contribute to something greater than themselves. In choir and ensemble settings, students learn responsibility, leadership, mutual respect, and collaboration while developing musical skills and artistic expression. I believe every student, regardless of ability level or background, should feel encouraged to participate meaningfully in the music-making process.
  • My teaching approach emphasizes practical musicianship through singing, listening, movement, composition, analysis, and performance. I strive to create engaging learning experiences where students actively explore musical concepts rather than passively receive information. I encourage students to think critically, reflect on their musical choices, and develop their own artistic voice while building strong technical and ensemble skills.
  • I also believe that music education should cultivate curiosity and appreciation for diverse musical traditions and cultures. Through studying and performing music from different historical periods and cultural backgrounds, students develop a broader understanding of the world and a deeper respect for others. My background in choral and sacred music traditions, combined with my experience in international education, has strengthened my commitment to fostering culturally responsive and globally minded learning environments.
  • As an educator, I aim to balance high expectations with encouragement and support. I believe students grow most when they are challenged within a safe and positive environment where mistakes are viewed as part of the learning process. Whether working with beginner musicians or advanced ensembles, I seek to help students develop confidence, resilience, creativity, and joy in music-making.
  • In today’s increasingly AI-driven world, I believe music education plays an even more essential role in human development. While technology continues to transform the way information is accessed and tasks are completed, music remains a deeply human experience that develops qualities machines cannot replace — empathy, collaboration, emotional expression, creativity, and interpersonal understanding.
  • Ensemble music-making, in particular, teaches students how to listen to one another, communicate nonverbally, work toward shared goals, and support each other through both challenges and successes. Through choir and collaborative performance experiences, students learn patience, responsibility, respect, and compassion while developing a sense of belonging and community.
  • I believe music classrooms should provide students with opportunities to develop not only musical skills, but also the emotional intelligence and human connection that will become increasingly valuable in the future. In this way, music education helps prepare students not only for academic success, but also for meaningful and thoughtful participation in society.
  • Ultimately, my goal is not only to develop skilled musicians, but also thoughtful, collaborative, and compassionate individuals who carry the values and experiences of music into their lives beyond the classroom.
