During a period of internal struggle, I encountered missionaries. They were men and women who were guided by passion and altruism. Underpinning their selfless devotion was universal love. Through long discussions with them, I remembered my passion since earliest childhood: medicine. I was always mesmerized by countless mysteries of the human body. I felt intimately attached to the Hippocratic goal of beneficence, which stressed serving all patients with respect and dignity. In an increasingly volatile and interconnected world, both diseases and treatments transcend boundaries. Meeting with the missionaries reinvigorated my passion for biomedicine, as it is one of the most potent ways to improve human welfare around the globe.
